Do research

Before going abroad, learn about the local culture and customs to better understand your new environment.

Participate in Orientation Events

Most universities host orientation sessions specifically for international students. These are great opportunities to meet fellow newcomers, learn about the campus, and get practical tips on living in your new country. Many orientation events also include social activities, making it easier to start conversations with people in a similar situation as you.

Join Clubs and Student Organizations

Look for student clubs or organizations that match your interests. Whether it’s a sports club, a cultural group, or an academic association, joining is a fantastic way to meet like-minded people. Some student groups, like ESN (Erasmus Student Network), are dedicated to helping international students integrate, hosting social events, cultural trips, and even language exchanges.

Be Open and Approachable

Don’t be afraid to take the first step in starting conversations! Locals often appreciate when internationals show interest in their culture and are open to making new connections. Smile, ask questions, and show curiosity about people’s experiences and backgrounds.

It will be the best way to enjoy your experience as much as possible!

Join online groups

Platforms like WhatsApp or Facebook groups often list social gatherings, cultural events, and activities happening in your area. These events are perfect for meeting both locals and other internationals who are also looking to connect.

Live with Locals or in Shared Accommodation

If possible, consider staying in a shared apartment or student residence where you can live with both local students and other internationals. This setup can give you a direct insight into the local way of life and provide numerous opportunities for casual interactions, cooking meals together, and exploring the city.

Take a Language Class or Join Language Exchanges

Learning the local language is one of the most effective ways to integrate into a new country. Even if you’re not fluent right away, locals will appreciate your effort. Many universities offer language classes for international students, or you can join informal language exchange programs. You can also consider some apps such as  Tandem, HelloTalk or Duolingo to practice.
